Industrial control panels, as defined by NEC section 409.2, are assemblies comprising two or more power circuit components, control circuit components, or a combination of both. These panels operate at less than 600V and include power circuits and/or control circuits.
A control circuit is responsible for providing the signals that direct the performance of the controlled equipment, but it does not carry the main power nor does it include the controlled equipment itself. The term “panel” indicates that the control system is mounted on or within an enclosure or subpanel. 

What is Done During Control Panel Installation?

The installation of an industrial control panel must comply with all applicable national (NEC, IEC, EN, etc.) and local electrical codes and ordinances.

Key Steps in Control Panel Installation:

Power Testing:

Large control panels often require testing appliances and equipment, such as vacuums used for maintenance. Collaborating with the electrical distributor to identify standard offerings that meet your needs can significantly reduce costs and delivery times.

Placement:

Determine the panel’s outside dimensions and cabinet door swing requirements. Allow sufficient space for a test cart to move around with doors open to minimize maintenance inefficiencies and hidden operational costs.

Environmental Considerations:

Control panels are typically located near the process area, where elevated ambient temperatures may necessitate air conditioning or ventilation fans with filters requiring regular maintenance. Depending on conditions, adding a heater or dehumidifier might be necessary.

Ventilation:

Ensure that air exhaust and intake vents are positioned for easy filter replacement and that they do not interfere with the process environment (e.g., avoiding air intake from an aluminum melting pot).

Ampacity Calculation:

Break down the requirements into discrete steps to determine the ampacity for the supply conductors accurately.

Short Circuit Current Rating (SCCR):

NEC requires every panel to be marked with its SCCR.

Overcurrent Protection:

Install either a single main overcurrent protective device (OCPD) in the panel or provide overcurrent protection ahead of the panel.

Grounding:

Ensure proper grounding measures are in place.
